Practice Structure
Founded in 1966, the practice was designed to encourage people of all levels of the organisation to make their maximum contribution to the practice's success. To encourage this, after a period of employment, everyone who is eligible is offered the opportunity to become a full partner.
Partnership Law has hardly been changed since the 19th Century and was imposing a constraint on the free development of professional firms. We certainly felt that constraint and, in order to retain our participatory philosophy as the practice expanded in the 1980s, it became necessary to form a second partnership.
With the introduction in April 2001 of a new legal entity, the limited liability partnership, we were able to become a single partnership again - the 26th LLP in the country and the first construction professional. As a unified partnership we can maintain the participatory ethos of the practice and offer greater efficiency and better service for our clients. The partnership ethos offers excellent opportunities for young engineers and these will expand with the new Max Fordham LLP. As part of this expansion we opened a new office in Cambridge in September 2001 to serve the increasing number of projects in south east England and an office in Edinburgh the following year.
