Funding Win for Southbank Centre Refurb
3 September 2015
The Southbank Centre has received lottery funding approval for the restoration of its famous Thames-side complex.
The refurbishment will see the Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Rooms close for two years from the 21st September, 2015. The project received a £5m boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), with a further £16.7m received from Arts Council England. The Centre has launched a fundraising campaign, titled 'Let The Light In', with the aim of collecting the final £3.9m needed to complete the work.
Collaborating with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Max Fordham is involved in the intricate upgrade of the building's services including heating, ventilation and lighting. The design will improve the environmental performance of the buildings and minimise energy consumption.
Stuart Hobley, head of HLF London, said: “The South Bank is one of London’s most vibrant and popular riverside areas. With the help of nearly £5 million of National Lottery players’ money, the Southbank Centre will be able to start conservation work and also give its historic archive a complete overhaul."
The funding will support the creation of a Southbank Centre Archive Studio, making historical records of the area available to the public for the first time.
