Iconic Alexandra Palace to be restored to its former glory

25 March 2015

Alexandra Palace, also known the 'People's Palace', has scooped funding for the major refurbishment of this much loved landmark.

The grade II* listed building will see the revamp of the Victorian Theatre and the creation of a new public entrance hall at the glazed east entrance. The project has received  a £18.8 million boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) with Haringey Council pledging £6.8 million and the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust hoping to fundraise £1m before 2016.

Max Fordham, working closely with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, have designed an intricate M&E and acoustic strategy. This will allow the creation of a more successful, diverse and accessible space, as over 40% of the entire building is not currently available to the public. Ventilation strategies with improvements to acoustic and thermal performance are keys features of the design.

With the significant development of the BBC studios into an interactive visitor attraction, Carole Souter, Chief Executive of HLF had this to say: 'Alexandra Palace has played a pivotal role in the development of popular entertainment- culminating in the birth of British television. The Eastern end has stood derelict for 35 years but now Lottery funding is heralding a new chapter for this iconic building, creating an inspirational space where people can learn about its rich and colourful history.'
