The transformation of the Contact Theatre

11 January 2016

The striking Contact Theatre, Manchester, has been granted planning permission for the refurbishment and extension of the 1990s arts centre.

Collaborating with Sheppard Robson, the proposal includes a new three story extension and accommodation to the existing building. The current structure, completed by Short and Associates in 1999, will see the redevelopment of performance and media spaces. This also includes the redesign of the box-office, bar, café, meeting spaces and young peoples' project areas.

Max Fordham's design will allow for natural ventilation and passive cooling in the auditorium, and the introduction of discreet acoustic treatment.

Matt Fenton, artistic director and chief executive of Contact, said: “The expanded Contact building will cement our national role as a hub for the training and development of future talent, on and off stage, with a focus on working with young people from the widest range of social, racial and economic backgrounds."

Contact is still waiting for final confirmation regarding funding from Arts Council England Capital, with fundraising continuing throughout 2016. The project is set for completion in 2018.
