Ravelin Sports Centre wins CIBSE Project of the Year!

1 March 2024

We're delighted that Ravelin Sports Centre has been named winner of the CIBSE Building Performance Award - Lesisure for 2024!

We're very proud of this project which sets a new benchmark for ultra-low energy sports facilities in the UK.

The project impressed the award judges with its careful, low-carbon design and application of technology to achieve a low-impact leisure centre with sports and swimming facilities.

We worked closely with architects FaulknerBrowns from the very start of the project to meet ambitious energy use and sustainability targets, including a BREEAM score of 'Outstanding'. The design is fossil fuel-free and has demonstrated an operational energy consumption of less than 100 kWh/m2/yr – a level of performance which no other equivalent sports centre in the UK has yet demonstrated. It's the seventh time since 2017 that Max Fordham has won Project of the Year at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards, which are the only industry awards that focus on measured performance outcomes, and not just design intent or performance specifications.

"Picking up a CIBSE performance award for the University of Portsmouth Sports Centre last night was a very proud moment. The unprecedented quality of the sporting environments and ultra-low energy performance is a testament to everyone involved in the design, construction, commissioning and ongoing operation of this stunning facility.  This level of sustainability, comfort and in-use energy performance can’t be achieved by engineers alone, everyone who contributed to the project was fully committed to achieving this outcome through a spirit of openness, collaboration and commitment to real sustainable outcomes." - Mark Palmer, Director, Sports Leader, Max Fordham
