I have over 25 years experience as an engineer and over that time I've worked on a broad spectrum of building types and sizes.
In 2002 I established the Edinburgh office of Max Fordham where I'm now based. We have worked hard over the past eight years to see the practice reach a prominent position in the Scottish construction industry. In that time I'm proud to be able to see our sustainable, whole building approach to engineering brought to life across the country.
To be a successful engineer I believe you need to be able to think in 3D. Approaching problems with an open mind, and stretching the imagination of the design team to find a collaborative way of solving them. I work closely with the client and architect from the outset of a project, exploring the boundaries of a brief and helping to establish a sustainable, integrated services framework.
I aim to bring detailed coordination and integration to a design in order to moderate the internal environment and create means by which natural elements are harnessed and technology is minimised. This low-energy, holistic approach has been employed in the most successful and satisfying buildings I have been part of. It recognises the impact that buildings and their users have on our environment and seeks to challenge the standard expectations of energy use in achieving comfortable, functional buildings across the whole range of building sectors. Especially those which require the implementation of a high level of technology. In fact, it is the challenge of resolving the integration of highly serviced technical elements which I still find exciting after 25 years.
