Horniman Museum, London

The Horniman Museum, an important Art Nouveau building designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, has collections including;
ethnography, natural history and musical instruments. Extensive renovations to provide additional exhibition space, education facilities and an enlarged conservation department for the museum have been designed by Allies & Morrison architects, with services by the Max Fordham practice.

The new galleries are fully air conditioned, and we worked closely with museum staff to design a system which would meet stringent conservation requirements but minimise capital and running costs as well as plant space requirements.

The management of light, artificial and natural, was a priority for the galleries and other public spaces. A flexible lighting control and daylight management system was designed to allow the museum to modify the quality and quantity of light to suit the needs of their changing exhibitions.
