South Bedfordshire Mental Health Provision

The project comprises the development of 12 buildings to house 216 patients on 7 sites in and around Dunstable. A range of mental-health accommodation is provided, from a secure unit to housing for long-term patients discharged into the community.

At the Community Health Care Centre, the 1960s Orchard and Faringdon Wing was refurbished to include modern facilities integrated into a homely environment. The heating and power plant was extended to service the entire wing as well as the new secure unit.

Two buildings for 24 elderly and 24 acutely ill patients were constructed using the CLASP system. The cruciform arrangement provides considerable daylight, with external views from each bedroom. The central corridors are fitted with rooflights.
