The Geffrye Museum

A dramatic modern extension by Branson Coates Architecture virtually doubles the size of this museum of English domestic interiors. The new wing houses permanent and temporary exhibitions, quality storage space, education rooms, a shop and a restaurant. To achieve the high level of control necessary for the preservation of the exhibits without excessive energy usage, the building fabric was treated as an integral part of the environmental strategy. The thermally heavy and highly insulated fabric helps to maintain a stable internal environment and enable the ventilation system to operate at a very low temperature differential. Very stable environmental conditions are achieved without mechanical cooling in a basement gallery designated for display of articles on loan. The BMS system controlling this also controls the heating system in the main building.
