Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre

Until the completion of the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre near the South Bank, a huge disparity existed between the needs of Coin Street’s growing residential community and the limited facilities available to the residents.

The vibrant and adaptable centre now houses a broad range of facilities under one roof, including a 70-place nursery, out-of-school space, café and a learning and enterprise support centre.

Our environmental approach concentrated on ensuring that the form, layout and materials of the building responded passively to the site conditions. Natural ventilation is employed extensively throughout the building, with a series of solar chimneys to help drive the process. The thermally heavyweight concrete structure ensures that the building stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The carefully balanced glazed areas on each facade provide optimum shading and light admittance, resulting in generous natural daylighting which reduces the reliance on electric lighting.

The exposed concrete of the office ceiling provides day and night-time heat storage. Coloured fabric panels attached to the concrete provide further absorption and prevent the spaces becoming too reverberant.
