Hull Truck Theatre

Hull Truck Theatre is the new home for the Hull Truck Theatre Company. It includes a 440-seat main house, a rehearsal room and a 150-seat studio theatre. It is recognised as one of the most sustainable theatres ever built.

People create heat and lots of people in places like theatres need to be kept cool to be comfortable.  Natural ventilation and groundwater cooling achieve comfortable temperatures and a fresh air feel for the audience. Noise from the busy main road outside is managed and the building uses very little energy.

The main auditorium features low energy lighting and is naturally ventilated making the patrons’ overall experience more pleasant. The ventilation strategy successfully makes use of borehole water, which eliminates the needs for noisy mechanical systems. The heating and cooling is cleverly concealed behind the raked seating.

The services design was carefully coordinated to complement each type of space and its respective requirements.

Hull Truck Theatre is one project in our continuing story of nearly 50 years of delivering sustainable theatre buildings.
