Larmenier and Sacred Heart Primary School
Larmenier School is a new combined 450-pupil school in Hammersmith, West London. It brought two schools together and was built around two 120 year old plane trees.
It's a lovely example of engagement with the school community, attention to the details - they care about - mattering very much and delivering a much loved building.
The design emphasises low energy, with consideration given to borehole water for WC flushing, solar water heating with UV disinfection and the use of timber for construction.
The sedum roof wraps around the tree in the centre of the site.
The roof profile is shaped to optimise the performance of south facing mounted solar panels. The electricity generated from them is displayed in the school hall for all to see.
The ventilation strategy featured carefully positioned, opening windows and rooflights, necessary for creating a comfortable teaching environment throughout the year whilst also minimising energy use.
Trellis for climbing plants on the south façade provides rain screen and shading.
Retractable awnings on the south elevation offer solar shading and glare control for the classrooms.
Generously daylit circulation spaces with rooflights on the first floor facilitate daylight reaching rooms on the levels below.
Air inlet in the playground provides fresh air to internal rooms via buried pipes that run beneath the building.
Larmenier and Sacred Heart Primary School is one project in our continuing story of nearly 50 years of delivering education buildings.
