Masterplanning & urban design

The conception of a masterplan and the laying out of an urban design must be informed by a detailed understanding of solar orientation, daylight availability and airflow. Our expertise in these topics is proven by a number of successful building designs developed by us to optimise natural environmental conditioning. This understanding also allows us to shape or ‘sculpt’ urban form to achieve similar results, creating spaces that use less energy and are more comfortable and enjoyable.

Large scale, forward-looking plans also require a masterplanning approach to infrastructure and strategic decisions can make the largest single contribution towards improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Our approach aims to include flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances, and we design infrastructure with this in mind. Be it energy, communications, water supply or waste disposal we develop a framework for delivery that can be clearly understood and developed in phases.

Our work in this field has been published in the practice book Sustainable Urban Design: An Environmental Approach
