Open letter urges new Prime Minister to strengthen economy by prioritising climate and nature crises

21 September 2022

We are amongst more than 100 signatories of an open letter urging Liz Truss to strengthen our economy by prioritising the response to climate and nature crises.

UK CEOs of businesses and finance institutions, including Amazon, the Co-op, and Coca-Cola, are calling on Prime Minister Liz Truss to build economic resilience through delivery of net zero emissions and restoring nature.

Hero Bennett, Sustainability Director and Partner at Max Fordham, signed the letter on our behalf

"Prioritising net zero and nature restoration is important, not just for the future of humanity, but also our economy. At Max Fordham, we see huge potential for the UK in green growth and urge the new Prime Minister to implement practical steps to help realise this." - Hero Bennett, Sustainability Director and Partner at Max Fordham

With inflation predicted to top 20 per cent if gas prices continue to rise, and the Bank of England warning the UK is heading towards recession, the letter underlines the urgent need for short and long-term government delivery plans for net zero and nature restoration.

The letter, which affirms business and finance sector commitment to support the UK’s climate and nature targets, comes nearly two weeks after the new Prime Minister announced plans to tackle the energy crisis, which included a new round of oil and gas licences and lifting the moratorium on fracking.

The full piece mapping out what is needed to improve energy security, shield the UK from volatile fossil fuel prices and enable the country to deliver its climate promises, can be read here.
