I focus my services design on what’s most important – people being comfortable in buildings. As designers, we need to consider this first and achieve it without wasting resources.

This is true for all building services design. I’ve developed expertise in two quite different areas – detailed mechanical & electrical design and passive design features. Both should be used appropriately, whether on minimally serviced schools or heavily-serviced leisure centres and cultural projects.

In my experience the best buildings come out of collaboration. I value the contribution of other design team members, the shared expertise and debate. Team work and good communication help to smooth any project, and are essential when tackling precise technical work on a short timescale.

The real problem with bad buildings, ones that are uncomfortable, is that they get pulled down. For me sustainability is a comfortable building that operates effectively and continues to do so over a long period of time.
