Arter Gallery
Arter Gallery is a new 6-storey, 18,000sqm monumental contemporary art gallery in Istanbul’s Dolapdere district. Spaces within the building are interlinked to create flexible exhibition areas for film, video, music, dance, literature and traditional arts.
The gallery also includes a hall for installation-based performance work that seats over 300 people. A second performance space can accommodate over 150 and can be used as a cinema, for concerts or other performances as well as a library, study centre and café.
We worked alongside Grimshaw Architects to provide M&E Engineering, Lighting Design and LEED Assessment services for the project.
The building has a number daylit galleries, a triple height entrance gallery, and a large "street gallery" with picture windows creating a link between the art and Istanbul. Galleries are interlinked by "internal streets" with transition zones, and the environmental conditioning and services infrastructure allows for a diverse range of uses for all spaces. Spaces requiring tight environmental control including archives, conservation, and the performance "black box" are located below ground. Grey water harvesting and water saving appliances help to keep water consumption low.
The gallery provides an important contribution to Turkey’s cultural life, which is enriched by the opportunities the building and its diverse programme creates.
Following completion, Arter Gallery achieved LEED Gold status.
