Chalkhill CAMHS Unit

Chalkhill CAMHS Unit

Chalkhill CAMHS is a child and adolescent mental health service facility, at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. It is an 18 bed facility which also features educational and consulting areas for day patients. We worked with user groups and facilities managers to understand the specific needs of everyone who would use the building.

The building delivers a safe and calm atmosphere. Natural light and ventilation give a fresh and open feel to spaces that have restricted allowable window openings. The external lighting design is welcoming and safe, and enhances views of the gardens whilst allowing use of the courtyard in the evening.

Nick Short Info
The design has a narrow plan to maximise the natural daylight entering the spaces and allow natural ventilation via the restricted allowable window openings, as seen in the secure bedroom.

A robust and functional approach to natural ventilation has enabled a strong but secure link to the external environment.
