Mottisfont Abbey Visitor Centre

Max Fordham's work on the Grade I listed Mottisfont Abbey continues our close working relationship with the National Trust.

Collaborating with Burd Haward Architects, we provided environmental engineering services on three new buildings and new entrance, reception, shop and café. The visitors centre includes a conversion of the Grade II* listed coach house into a restaurant.

Our approach outlines a long term strategy that can be applied across other National Trust sites, including a biomass log boiler and solar thermal hot water. To improve the building fabric, we increased insulation levels and reduced the air permeability,  reducing the heat loss from the building.

Jack Hobhouse Info
Increased insulation levels and minimised air permeability considerably reduced the heat loss from the building
Jack Hobhouse Info
The shop is naturally ventilated with low level floor vents and high level automatic opening roof lights
Jack Hobhouse Info
The heating system comprises of a combination of warm air and radiators, balancing energy usage and minimising excess power use
Jack Hobhouse Info
Increased glazing and rooflights reduce the need for artificial lighting. This increases the amount of natural solar gain in the spaces, further reducing the heating load

The visitor centre is predominantly made from timber
