This begins with a thorough understanding of the site climate and performance criteria of the spaces within the structure. The most suitable measures are then selected based on performance, aesthetics and cost.

Passive design is a core part of our service. Advanced modelling techniques such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) allow us to push the boundaries of what is possible, enabling us to implement complex natural ventilation strategies in confidence.

These techniques are also applied to mechanical ventilation systems to ensure that performance criteria are met within tight constraints. This is achieved whether they are the acoustic requirements of auditoria, air velocity limitations for comfort or a desire to maintain a clean architectural aesthetic.

Providing a great internal environment starts with the building envelope. Views and access to outside must be balanced against solar shading and energy consumption. Solving this equation through the detailed design of the facade is the starting point for our lighting design.

We have particular expertise in the introduction of daylight into gallery and museum spaces, where tight conservation requirements must be taken into account. Examples include our award winning refurbishment of Tate Britain, the Stirling Prize winning MAXXI gallery in Rome and innovative analysis techniques applied to reintroducing daylight into the Hayward Gallery.
