Phil knows that strong collaboration underpins great projects. He loves thinking about a building at its earliest stages, negotiating a design approach with the external team then working with our team to deliver it.

Phil joined the practice in 1988 with a degree in botany and a rigorous, analytical approach. In 2001, he co-opened our first office outside London, in Cambridge, and he now splits his time between our Cambridge and London offices.

His extensive project experience includes delivering sustainable education buildings, versatile performance spaces, sensitive historical refurbishments and large-scale masterplans. He led our team on the climate-resilient, BREEAM ‘Excellent’ design for Sevenoaks School Science and Technology and Sixth Form Centre, applying thermal mass and borehole cooling to maintain comfortable year-round temperatures, all discreetly concealed within the architectural design.

He is passionate about everything he does and is driven by a genuine desire to make a positive difference. His leadership encourages intellectual freedom and creative thinking, helping us to build on our heritage and keep innovating.

“In all my work I champion low energy, low carbon design and sensitive architectural integration, always looking for the best solution for the project. There is a good solution to every challenge - you just have to open your mind enough to allow it to present itself.”
