Chansu Health Clinic, Zambia

We collaborated with Build It International to assist with the design of a much needed maternity clinic in rural Zambia. The project was delivered as part of our Developing Countries work, providing engineering expertise on community projects that normally can’t access this kind of assistance.

Challenge

Build It worked with the local community in Nchute and the Ministry of Health for Chongwe District to build a health post, which has improved access to health services for over 2,500 people.

We provided the design for an autonomous solar-powered lighting installation working with the local community to identify locally available equipment and skills. We used our knowledge and experience of similar scenarios to ensure the systems were as simple, effective and low maintenance as possible.

The solar power system, which also has the facility to power small medical equipment, has been completed by a local solar specialist who corresponded directly with our engineers and the Build It International site architect. On the 10th of July 2013 Nchute Health Clinic’s first baby was born, the first day the clinic was open for business.
