11 Belgrave Road has been named Retrofit Project of the Year at this year's Building Awards, with judges praising its 'outstanding sustainability credentials'.
Hosted by comedian Tom Allen, the Building Awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel in London’s Mayfair was attended by more than 1,000 people.
11 Belgrave Road was one of ten projects nominated for the Retrofit of the Year award. Max Fordham Senior Engineer, Dean Irvine, (pictured centre left) accepted the award along with Ilyas Aslam, Chief Operating Officer at developer Quadrum Global, Lewis Benmore, Associate at Eric Parry Architects, and Tom Lovegrove, Project Manager at BAM Construction.
The office retrofit in Victoria, London, has transformed a tired 1950s structure into a net-zero workplace of the future. The redevelopment provides 109,000ft2 of grade A office space, 14,000ft2 of communal areas, and best-in-class amenities.
The project extended the building’s life by over a decade while retaining 35% of the existing structure. The development also prioritises occupant wellbeing and smart technology integration. It is the first project in the UK to achieve a NABERS UK 5.5* design-reviewed target rating for in-use energy efficiency, has been pre-certified WELL Platinum and achieved a design stage BREEAM 'Outstanding' rating.
The award comes after 11 Belgrave Road won the Climate Action award at the Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards in June. It's also shortlisted for two ESG Edge Awards (Outstanding Carbon Reduction Initiative and Retrofit Project of the Year), two NLA Awards (Workplace and Retrofit), and an edie Net Zero Award (Green Building Project of the Year).
The judges said: “This project is a brilliantly designed, well-executed scheme that meets all criteria, with outstanding sustainability credentials, including net zero carbon in design, construction, and operation; the UK's first NABERS UK design-reviewed 5.5 Star rating; BREEAM Outstanding; WELL pre-certified targeting Platinum; and WiredScore and SmartScore Platinum certifications, supported by positive client testimonials.”
Chloe McCulloch, Editorial Director at Building, said: “The Building Awards attracted an impressive number of entries and the standard across all the categories has been exceptional, showing the construction industry’s adaptability and resilience in challenging times. Congratulations to all our winners and to all the finalists.”
