Reflections: the future of engineering and staying one step ahead

This year, we're celebrating the 60th birthday of our practice, which Max founded in his Camden home back in 1966. We've been busy capturing our projects, culture and our people's most insightful thoughts.

In this film, we asked some of our most innovative engineers and consultants to reflect on the future of their profession. Our environment is changing rapidly. What does this mean for our work?

Factors such as climate change and the environmental impact of buildings are influencing how we design. How do we, as engineers, respond in a responsible, creative, and human-centred way? And, stay one step ahead of what's coming?

Learn about a building of the future - 11 Belgrave Road

11 Belgrave Road delivers Grade A workspace, communal spaces and best-in-class facilities in addition to 13,000ft2 of exceptional green space seamlessly woven throughout.

The retention of a significant portion of the building's existing concrete frame, as well as efforts to reduce environmental impact throughout the project, have resulted in reduced embodied carbon emissions, with the aspiration to be net zero carbon in both construction and operation. It is the first project in the UK to achieve a NABERS UK 5.5* design-reviewed target rating for in-use energy efficiency, and is certified WELL Platinum and a BREEAM 'Outstanding'.

The MEP strategy focused on minimising carbon in operation and arming the building users with information and flexibility to aid this - passive ventilation and thermal mass are supported by smart mechanical ventilation with display screens to inform occupants of real-time energy use. Heating and cooling are provided by air source heat pumps located in the basement, which frees up an additional floor of usable space, and carbon filters improve air quality for the building users.

Wiredscore and Smartscore Platinum were achieved, giving potential tenants assurance that the building delivers an exceptional user experience, is adaptable to a particular tenant’s needs, and is fully future-proofed so it can continue to be used for many years to come.
