Manchester

We opened our Manchester office in 2012 inside the historic Carver's Warehouse. In 2025, we moved into a new, larger office space inside the recently-refurbished Cottonopolis building.

Our Manchester office

Since opening in 2012, our Manchester office has grown to over 25 people from MEP, digital design and acoustic engineers, to Sustainability and Passivhaus consultants, and office and project administrators.

As a diverse collection of people who enjoy working together, the office has a friendly and relaxed feel. Our people also choose to spend time together outside office hours, including as part of hiking and running groups, playing five-a-side football, and having regular team lunches and evening socials.

We have a reputation in the North West for our ambitious 'first principles' low-carbon designs and our thoughtful, collaborative approach. We're proud of the projects we’ve been involved in, including the stunning refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall, the decarbonisation of the Science and Industry Museum, the multi-award-winning Hallé St Peter's, the sensitive development of Wentworth Woodhouse Camellia House, and the net zero carbon RIBA award-winning Woodlands Day Nursery at Staffordshire University, to name just a few.

A short film

Creating a sustainable office

We moved into our new office in 2025, having chosen it as a space that represents the work that we do. Like many of our own projects, it is a historic building that has been retrofitted and made ‘fit for the future’. Circular economy and reuse have been central to the design of the building and our space. Internal partitions are made from historic timber and glass recovered from elsewhere in the building, rather than new plasterboard, and most of our furniture is re-loved, including a lovely industrial steel bar table from the pub below.

The heating is all electric to reduce our dependence on direct fossil fuels. Our lighting has full presence detection with daylight sensing so we can make full use of the beautiful daylight and minimise energy. The refurbished sash windows provide natural ventilation, demonstrating the Victorians’ understanding of passive design, a lesson we build upon with our designs today. We also meter our electricity consumption so we can learn and improve.

Our Manchester office has a green lease, like all our offices has an energy champion to monitor and reduce energy consumption, and we fill our internal spaces with greenery and plants to increase the connection to nature.

Sustainable travel

Most people who work in our offices travel on foot, by bike, or on public transport - these are the most sustainable ways to get around. We hope this will encourage all of our visitors to also travel to our offices in the most sustainable way possible.

The office is a six-minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly station and local bus routes, or a five-minute walk from the tram. There are public bike racks at Piccadilly station or we can provide space in the building's bike storage area in the basement.

Accessibility information

Step-free access to our Manchester office is available via the main entrance to the Cottonopolis Building on Newton Street. Once inside, lifts allow access to our first-floor office.

The building has a concierge service between the hours of 7am and 7pm on weekdays. Outside of these hours, at weekends, and on bank holidays, access is via a key fob system.
