Tom uses his understanding of the interplay between building physics and MEP systems to create elegant buildings that tread lightly on the planet.

Tom is a Director of an engineering group in our London office, providing engineering vision and taking overall project responsibility. He believes engineers need to understand and communicate the physical principles of how buildings work, and the role MEP systems play in the wider ecosystem of a building.

Tom is also our Education leader and has broad experience of delivering projects across all sectors. He is particularly interested in how environmental design can support learning, and how accepted approaches might need to evolve as we work towards Net Zero and adapt to a changing climate. His projects include the RIBA Stirling Prize-winning Magdalene College New Library. This beautiful, passively ventilated library and archive, flooded with natural light, was carefully designed around its occupants, giving students control over their local study environment while ensuring the whole building remains comfortable throughout the year, now and into the future.

“For me, building physics opens new possibilities for exciting design, combining elegant architecture with innovative engineering.”
