Woodland Trust HQ

A new headquarters for the Woodland Trust in Grantham, Lincolnshire provides offices and meeting spaces for 200 staff. The aim for the 2,800m2 headquarters was to create a highly innovative and sustainable building which has been reflected in its BREEAM Excellent rating.

Our services strategy includes extensive use of natural ventilation, green roofing, solar shading, facades designed for good daylighting, lightshelves and possible use of a wind turbine. We carried out thermal modelling to investigate the capacity of the timber/concrete structure to absorb heat gains. We also provided advice on acoustics and renewable energy feasibility.

Louvres provide shading to the office's south elevation.

The void through the floorplate encourages natural ventilation, using the stack effect, as well as daylight distribution.

Concrete radiators attached to the ceiling provide passive air conditioning, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night.

External baffles encourage the correct flow of air through the natural ventilation system.

Internal light shelves help to distribute daylight to the centre of the building.

Woodland Trust HQ is one project in our continuing story of nearly 50 years of delivering workspace buildings.
