The Hub, Coventry University
The Hub is a mixed use building for Coventry University housing centralised pastoral, academic, social and welfare services. Informal learning areas to facilitate student group work compliment these functions and are arranged around central atria.
The exposed concrete construction of the building reduces power consumption and limits summertime over-heating. In addition to this a number of low-zero carbon technologies have been utilised including using borehole water as the heat rejection medium for the central cooling plant, solar thermal collectors to supplement the building’s large hot water load and rainwater harvesting for WC flushing.
A large green sedum roof to increase biodiversity of the site helped the building achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
